background information

THE INTENDED EXPERENCE

Deformity
Noun
The situation in which a part of the body has not developed in the normal way or with the normal shape (Cambridge, 2021)

Skin
Noun
The natural outer layer that covers a person, animal, fruit, etc. (Cambridge, 2021)

TAKEN FROM PRIMARY RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN 2020 : PARTNERED PROJECT SENSORY CSL

‘As I suffer from a range of allergies and skin sensitivities, I was able to conduct a range of
primary research. To initiate this, I wanted to track my face and document the changes it went throughout the day. This was completed through a series of photographs of my face in the same position, to document slight changes. Thus, aiming to generate an understanding of how skin and sensory aspects are affected through redness, swelling and irritation.’ (I Briggs, 2020)

Following my research I conducted last year, I want to create my own anecdotal perspective of skin and its deformative in a conceptual garment. Everyone's skin is different, and reacts in different ways. This previous research continues to show on a day by day basis that my skin would change every day. Suffering from many allergies this can be difficult to experience.

Through a garment I want to create textures that don't necessary look like skin but inform an audience of the deformity it could have. Further the garment will explore interesting and innovative textures that could possibly look like skin. Exploring the deformity will enable and acknowledge skin allergies and irritations that everyone experiences. This aiming
to create an awareness of the self consciousness around skin and body.

STATMENT OF INTENT

An anecdotal perspective of skin deformity, which considers the manipulation of material as a second skin concept. This not necessary taking form as skin but informing the direction of skin imperfections, deformity, and insecurities. Through bodily emotions and lived experiences these pieces are created to enlighten an audience of textures that skin take form of. The minimalism of silhouettes establishes the surrounding of the body embellished with ‘skin’ to reveal an understanding of skin abnormality suffered by different people. With aims to create awareness and make one
proud of what they look like.

CORE CONCEPT
An anecdotal perspective of skin deformity. To explore the manipulation of fabric as a second skin, not necessarily taking the form of skin, but my anecdotal perspective of how skin deforms, reacts and manipulates. Thus looking into bodily emotions and lived experienced of feeling insecure and body confidence. Therefore questioning into what these textures look like as emotions. Creating a persona inspired by manipulation, personal primary research and bodily emotions
